About Sekolah Rendah Northern Lights

Sekolah Rendah Northern Lights opened in 2016 in Simpang Ampat, on the mainland side of Penang (Seberang Perai Selatan). The school has grown to over 350 students in its first decade of operation. It runs alongside Sekolah Menengah Northern Lights, giving families a continuous primary-to-secondary pathway within the same group.

What sets SR Northern Lights apart from other private primaries in Penang is the weight it places on physical education. Badminton, swimming, and martial arts are compulsory for all students. The school invested in an indoor 25-metre swimming pool with six lanes, which means swimming is a timetabled activity rather than an occasional excursion.

Curriculum at Sekolah Rendah Northern Lights

SR Northern Lights follows the KSSR national curriculum as its academic foundation. On top of KSSR, the school applies its C.A.S.S. framework, which organises student development across four pillars: Creativity, Academic, Sports, and Services.

The Academic pillar covers the standard KSSR subjects: Bahasa Melayu, English, Mathematics, Science, and Islamic/Moral Studies. The Creativity pillar includes arts, music, and design thinking activities. Sports goes well beyond the typical primary school PE class, with the compulsory badminton, swimming, and martial arts programmes forming the backbone. Services introduces community engagement and leadership from the primary years.

English is the primary medium of instruction, though Bahasa Melayu is taught as a core subject in line with national requirements. The school serves Year 1 through Year 6 (ages 7 to 12).
