About Kai Dee Middle School

Kai Dee Middle School (开智中学) is the only Chinese Independent High School in the Bintulu Division of Sarawak. The school carries the Kai Dee name from an older institution in Sibu, where a Kai Dee school operated from the early twentieth century. In 2000, the secondary department moved to Bintulu, leaving the primary school, now SJK (C) Kai Dee, in Sibu. The two share a name and a history but are separate schools: one is a Chinese national-type primary school, the other a privately funded independent secondary school.

Sitting at Lot 490 on Jalan Bintulu-Tatau, the school serves Mandarin-educated families across a fast-growing industrial town. Because it is the single Chinese independent option in the division, it draws students from Bintulu town and the surrounding districts who want to continue their education in Mandarin past primary level. The school marked its 25th year in Bintulu in 2024.

Curriculum at Kai Dee Middle School

Kai Dee Middle School follows the standard Chinese Independent High School structure of six years: Junior Middle 1 to 3 followed by Senior Middle 1 to 3. The medium of instruction is Mandarin, and the curriculum is shaped by the United Chinese School Committees Association of Malaysia (Dong Zong, or UCSCAM). Students work toward the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), the qualification that defines the independent school track and is accepted by universities across Taiwan, Singapore, and parts of the Commonwealth.

Bahasa Melayu is a compulsory subject throughout, and the school also prepares students for the national SPM examination so that graduates hold both the UEC and a Malaysian government certificate. This dual track is common across the independent sector and keeps both local and overseas tertiary routes open.

Kai Dee Middle School in Sarawak

Kai Dee Middle School sits in Bintulu, a coastal industrial town between Sibu and Miri on the central Sarawak coast. The school’s position as the division’s only Chinese independent secondary school gives it a settled role in the local Mandarin-medium community.
