About Kiang Hin Middle School

Kiang Hin Middle School (建兴中学) is a Chinese independent high school in Sibu, Sarawak, registered as Sekolah Menengah Persendirian Kiang Hin. Its origins go back to 1914, when Hinghua settlers who had opened up land in the Hou Pu Gang district built a church and then a school for their children. After the Second World War, with the Japanese occupation over, residents who had supported the resistance petitioned the British colonial administration for a secondary school. Kiang Hin Middle School was formally founded in 1946.

The school became independent in 1960. Its enrolment at the time did not meet the Ministry of Education’s threshold, and the board declined the ministry’s proposal to merge with another school, choosing to continue on its own as a private Chinese-medium institution. In 1962, when Chinese-medium high schools across Sarawak were asked to switch all teaching to English, Kiang Hin was one of six that refused, keeping Mandarin as its medium of instruction. It is the oldest of the Chinese independent high schools in the Sibu division and carries a strong Hinghua community identity.

Curriculum at Kiang Hin Middle School

Kiang Hin Middle School follows the six-year Chinese Independent High School programme: Junior Middle 1 to 3 followed by Senior Middle 1 to 3. Students sit the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), the standardised examination run by the United Chinese School Committees Association of Malaysia (Dong Zong / UCSCAM) since 1975, at Junior Middle and Senior Middle levels.

Mandarin is the main medium of instruction, in keeping with the school’s decision in the 1960s to keep Chinese-medium teaching. Bahasa Melayu and English are taught as compulsory languages, so the trilingual emphasis on Chinese, Malay, and English runs through the timetable. The school describes its teaching philosophy as accepting students of all backgrounds, with weight given to moral education and Chinese cultural tradition alongside academic subjects. Where a Chinese independent high school offers a parallel SPM track, students can sit national examinations as well; families should confirm the current arrangement with the school. For a comparison of the UEC route against the national stream, see the guide to SPM.

Fees at Kiang Hin Middle School

Kiang Hin Middle School runs an unusually direct set of incentives for new students. Junior Middle 1 entrants pay no tuition for the full year, receive a school bag donated by the alumni association, and are given a RM 300 enrolment incentive from the board of directors, paid in three instalments. Students who reach the school’s academic and conduct marks in Junior 1 can carry the tuition waiver into Junior 2 and Junior 3.

The school also runs financial assistance for students from lower-income families, who can apply to the board of directors, along with a textbook lending scheme. Beyond these waivers and aid, Chinese independent high schools in Malaysia generally charge between RM 3,000 and RM 12,000 a year once tuition, facility, and examination components are added together. Kiang Hin Middle School does not publish a single fixed figure, so parents should contact the school directly for the current fee schedule.

Admissions at Kiang Hin Middle School

Entry to Kiang Hin Middle School is at Junior Middle 1, usually for pupils completing Chinese national-type primary school (SJKC). The school accepts students of all backgrounds and places weight on conduct alongside academic readiness. Because the Junior 1 tuition waiver and the RM 300 incentive apply to new entrants, families should register within the school’s intake window to qualify.

Prospective parents can reach the school on 084-320219 to confirm intake dates, required documents, and the current admission process.

For Kiang Hin Middle School students, the UEC route therefore leads to a recognised local pathway into higher education close to home.
