About Monash University Malaysia

Monash University Malaysia opened in 1998 as the first foreign university campus in Malaysia, initially under the name Monash Sunway. The campus is operated by Monash University, a member of Australia’s Group of Eight (Go8) research-intensive universities. It is the largest international campus in the Monash system and the third largest campus overall across all Monash locations.

The university holds a QS World University Ranking of #36 in 2026, making it the highest-ranked institution operating in Malaysia by a considerable margin. Monash University Malaysia received self-accreditation status from the Malaysian government in 2010, allowing it to approve its own programs without individual MQA review. All degrees awarded are Monash University (Australia) degrees, dual-recognised by both Malaysian and Australian authorities.

Over 11,000 students from more than 80 countries study at the Bandar Sunway campus. The university has announced plans for a second campus at Tun Razak Exchange in central Kuala Lumpur, with a projected investment of RM 2.8 billion and an expected opening in 2032.

Programs at Monash University Malaysia

Monash University Malaysia operates seven schools covering the core academic disciplines.

School of Business offers programs in accounting, banking and finance, business analytics, econometrics, and international business. The Bachelor of Business and Commerce is one of the most enrolled programs on campus, costing RM 132,480 over three years.

School of Engineering runs programs in chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical, and robotics engineering. The Bachelor of Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering costs RM 218,880. School of Information Technology covers computer science, data science, and cybersecurity, with the Bachelor of Computer Science in Data Science at RM 141,120.

Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences offers the five-year MBBS program (Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine) at RM 588,000, one of the most expensive medical degrees in Malaysia. The school also runs biomedical science and psychology programs. School of Pharmacy ranks #4 worldwide in the QS Subject Rankings 2025 for pharmacy and pharmacology.

School of Arts and Social Sciences and School of Science round out the academic offering with programs in communications, psychology, applied chemistry, biotechnology, and food science.

All degrees carry the Monash University (Australia) qualification. Graduates receive the same testamur as students at Monash’s Clayton and Caulfield campuses in Melbourne.

Fees at Monash University Malaysia

Monash University Malaysia is positioned at the premium end of the Malaysian private university market. Annual tuition ranges from approximately RM 40,000 to RM 70,000 for most undergraduate programs.

Starting 1 July 2025, a 6% service tax applies to tuition and related fees for international students at all private universities in Malaysia, including Monash. This adds to the base tuition for non-Malaysian students.

Monash offers scholarships including the Monash High Achiever Award (up to 50% tuition waiver), the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation Scholarships, and need-based bursaries. Merit-based awards typically require strong academic results in pre-university qualifications.

Facilities at Monash University Malaysia

The Bandar Sunway campus is located within Sunway City, a planned township that includes Sunway Pyramid shopping mall, Sunway Lagoon theme park, and Sunway Medical Centre. This gives students immediate access to retail, entertainment, and healthcare facilities without leaving the immediate area.

On-campus facilities include a gymnasium, outdoor swimming pool, sports courts, and multiple food outlets. Academic facilities cover dedicated labs for each school, including engineering workshops, IT labs, medical simulation suites, and pharmacy compounding rooms. The campus library provides access to the full Monash University digital library system, giving students the same research database access as Australian campus students.

Student accommodation is available at nearby Sunway-linked residences, though the university does not operate its own on-campus housing.

Admissions at Monash University Malaysia

Monash University Malaysia accepts students for three intake periods: February, July, and October. The medicine program has a single February intake.

Entry requirements follow Australian university standards, which are generally higher than Malaysian private university norms. Undergraduate applicants need A-Level, STPM, IB Diploma, or equivalent qualifications with program-specific grade requirements. Engineering and science programs require strong mathematics and science passes. The MBBS program is highly selective, requiring top academic results and passing the university’s entrance assessment.

English proficiency requirements follow Monash global standards: IELTS 6.5 (with no band below 6.0) for most programs, or IELTS 7.0 for medicine. TOEFL, PTE Academic, and Cambridge English are also accepted.

Students who completed their secondary education at international schools in Selangor with Cambridge A-Level or IB Diploma qualifications can apply directly without a foundation year.

Monash University Malaysia in Selangor

Monash University Malaysia is located in Bandar Sunway, Subang Jaya, within the same township as Sunway University and Taylor’s University. The area forms one of Malaysia’s densest private higher education clusters, with three major universities within walking distance of each other.

The campus is approximately 25 minutes from central Kuala Lumpur by car. Public transport options include the BRT Sunway line (connecting to the Kelana Jaya LRT) and bus services along the Federal Highway corridor. The planned RM 2.8 billion campus at Tun Razak Exchange will give Monash a second location in the heart of KL’s financial district.
