About Multimedia University (MMU)

Multimedia University holds a specific place in Malaysian education history: it was the country’s first private university, established in 1997 under the Private Higher Educational Institutions Act as Malaysia moved to open degree-level education to private providers. The university was built as a direct companion institution to the Multimedia Super Corridor, a government-initiated technology and media development zone stretching from Kuala Lumpur City Centre south through Cyberjaya and Putrajaya to Kuala Lumpur International Airport. MMU’s Cyberjaya campus was constructed alongside that corridor, with the intention of training the technology and creative professionals who would work in the companies and agencies moving into the MSC zone.

MMU’s Cyberjaya campus organises its programs across several faculties, with multimedia, film, computing, and engineering at the core of its academic identity.

The Faculty of Creative Multimedia is one of the programs MMU is most associated with nationally. It offers degrees in multimedia design, animation, game design, and interactive media. Graduates from this faculty have gone into film and animation studios, advertising agencies, and game development companies across the region.

The Faculty of Cinematic Arts is a separate unit that trains students in film direction, cinematography, screenwriting, and production. This program is less common among Malaysian universities, and MMU’s long-running film programs have produced graduates working in the Malaysian film and television industry. The Faculty of Engineering covers electrical engineering, electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, telecommunications, and computer engineering. MMU offers scholarship categories that include merit scholarships for high SPM and pre-university performers, sports scholarships, and Bumiputera scholarship programs. Facilities at MMU Cyberjaya

The Cyberjaya campus is a purpose-built facility that was constructed from the ground up in the late 1990s as part of the broader MSC development. The campus layout is open and campus-style, with academic buildings, student services, and residential facilities spread across a planned site rather than compressed into vertical towers.

Academic facilities include lecture halls, tutorial rooms, and a full suite of faculty-specific labs. The engineering faculty operates electronics labs, mechanical fabrication facilities, and telecommunications infrastructure for teaching and applied research. The computing faculty runs cybersecurity labs, data analytics workstations, and development environments. The creative multimedia faculty uses animation studios, motion capture facilities, and graphics labs, while the cinematic arts faculty operates full film production studios with camera equipment, lighting rigs, and editing suites.

The campus library serves both campuses and maintains digital database access alongside physical collections. Sports facilities include a gymnasium, outdoor courts, a swimming pool, and field spaces. On-campus residential accommodation is available in student hostels, and the broader Cyberjaya township has grown to include private apartment blocks, restaurants, retail outlets, and the Cyberjaya City Centre mall, all within manageable distance of the campus.

Admissions at Multimedia University (MMU)

MMU accepts applications for three main intakes per year, typically in February, June, and October, aligned with the Malaysian semester calendar. Some faculties offer additional intake windows for specific programs.

Foundation applicants require a minimum of five credits in SPM or equivalent O-Level results, with mathematics and sciences required for technology-track foundations. Postgraduate applicants need a relevant bachelor’s degree with a minimum grade threshold, typically a CGPA of 2.50 or above. Some postgraduate programs require a research proposal at the application stage, particularly for research-mode master’s and doctoral programs.

MMU in Cyberjaya, Selangor

Cyberjaya is a planned city in Sepang, Selangor, developed from the late 1990s as the technology hub of the Multimedia Super Corridor. The city was built largely from undeveloped land and has grown into a mid-sized urban centre housing technology companies, government data centres, shared service operations, and educational institutions including MMU.

The campus is accessible by car via the Maju Expressway (MEX) and the Damansara-Puchong Expressway extensions into Cyberjaya. Public transport connections have improved since the Putrajaya Sentral MRT station opened on the Putrajaya Line, with bus connections from there to Cyberjaya. KLIA and KLIA2 are approximately 25 to 30 kilometres from the campus, accessible via the ELITE Highway.

Cyberjaya’s urban infrastructure has matured over the years but remains less dense than Subang Jaya, Petaling Jaya, or central Kuala Lumpur. Students who prefer a quieter campus environment with proximity to tech industry offices find the location suitable. Those who want immediate access to a wider range of urban amenities typically travel to nearby Putrajaya or Puchong.

MMU’s Melaka campus serves students in the southern Peninsular Malaysia region, offering selected engineering and technical programs in a separate setting from the Cyberjaya main campus.

Students from private secondary schools in Selangor frequently apply to MMU’s creative multimedia and computing programs, attracted by the combination of fee affordability and program specialisation in digital technology fields.
