About Kuen Cheng High School

Kuen Cheng High School is a Chinese Independent secondary school in Kuala Lumpur and one of the oldest schools in Malaysia. It was founded on 13 September 1908 in a rented shoplot at Kampung Attap, opening with 18 students as the first institution in the country to offer formal education for girls at a time when schooling for girls was uncommon in the local Chinese community. The founders included Wu Xuehua, principal Zhong Zhuo Jing, and Cheong Yoke Choy.

The school moved to Harmony Street in 1909 and, in 1936, was commissioned by the Selangor education authorities to train teachers. In 1956 it relocated to its present site on Lornie Road, now Jalan Syed Putra. For its first hundred years it was known as Kuen Cheng Girls’ High School. In 2008 it became co-educational and adopted its current name, Kuen Cheng High School. It is one of the larger Chinese Independent High Schools in Kuala Lumpur.

Curriculum at Kuen Cheng High School

Kuen Cheng High School follows the Chinese Independent High School structure of six year levels: Junior Middle 1 to 3 and Senior Middle 1 to 3. The main academic target is the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), the standardised examination administered by Dong Zong (the United Chinese School Committees Association) through its examination body, the United Chinese School Committees Association of Malaysia. The UEC is recognised for entry to many universities in Malaysia and abroad.

Mandarin is the medium of instruction across subjects, with Bahasa Melayu and English taught as compulsory languages. Alongside the UEC track, the school prepares students for the national SPM examination, giving graduates both the Chinese-stream qualification and the national certificate. The dual track is a defining feature of the school: in the 2024 SPM cohort, all 802 candidates passed, 67.58% scored 5As or above, and 101 students achieved 11 or 12 A’s.
