About Phor Tay Private High School

Phor Tay Private High School (菩提独中) is a Chinese Independent secondary school at 19-A, Jalan Bagan Jermal, George Town, on Penang island. It is the only Buddhist-founded Chinese Independent school in Malaysia, which sets it apart from the other Chinese Independent High Schools on the island. The school carries the Hokkien rendering of “Bodhi” (菩提), the term for awakening associated with the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment.

The institution grew out of work begun in 1935 by Venerable Fang Lian, a Buddhist nun from China, with a free school added in 1940. The Chinese Independent secondary school itself was established in 1962. For decades the school shared its history with a national-type counterpart, but when SMJK Phor Tay relocated to Sungai Dua in Bayan Lepas in 2009, the independent school took sole possession of the Bagan Jermal campus. Today it is a co-educational school serving around 250 students, small enough to keep close contact between teachers and pupils.
