About Nan Hwa High School

Nan Hwa High School, registered in Malay as Sekolah Tinggi Nan Hwa (Persendirian), is a Chinese Independent High School in Kampung Sungai Wangi, Ayer Tawar, within the Manjung district of Perak. Its origins go back to 1935, when the secondary sections of several local Chinese primary schools merged into a single Nan Hwa school, with the first academic year beginning in January 1936. The Second World War forced the school to close, and it reopened in 1946.

The turning point came in 1962. Changes to national education policy required Chinese secondary schools to choose between converting to the government-aided national-type system or continuing privately with Mandarin as the medium of instruction. Nan Hwa split into two: the converted school became SMJK Nan Hwa in Sitiawan, while the private stream continued as an independent Chinese school. That private stream is the school described here. On 31 August 1984, it relocated to its present campus in Sungai Wangi, where later development added student facilities, a swimming pool, an arts centre, a computer centre, and boarding accommodation.
