About Nan Hwa High School
Nan Hwa High School, registered in Malay as Sekolah Tinggi Nan Hwa (Persendirian), is a Chinese Independent High School in Kampung Sungai Wangi, Ayer Tawar, within the Manjung district of Perak. Its origins go back to 1935, when the secondary sections of several local Chinese primary schools merged into a single Nan Hwa school, with the first academic year beginning in January 1936. The Second World War forced the school to close, and it reopened in 1946.
The turning point came in 1962. Changes to national education policy required Chinese secondary schools to choose between converting to the government-aided national-type system or continuing privately with Mandarin as the medium of instruction. Nan Hwa split into two: the converted school became SMJK Nan Hwa in Sitiawan, while the private stream continued as an independent Chinese school. That private stream is the school described here. On 31 August 1984, it relocated to its present campus in Sungai Wangi, where later development added student facilities, a swimming pool, an arts centre, a computer centre, and boarding accommodation.
Curriculum at Nan Hwa High School
Nan Hwa High School teaches the Chinese Independent High School curriculum, a six-year programme spanning Junior Middle 1 to 3 and Senior Middle 1 to 3. The curriculum is coordinated by Dong Zong, the United Chinese School Committees Association of Malaysia, which sets the syllabus and administers the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC). Unified examinations fall at the end of Form 3 (Junior Middle 3) and Form 5 (Senior Middle 3).
Mandarin is the main medium of instruction, and Bahasa Melayu is taught as a compulsory subject. The school has also introduced bilingual teaching in some subjects, reflecting its mixed local and international intake. Families weighing the UEC track against the national exam route can compare it with SPM: the UEC is the exit qualification recognised by many private and overseas universities, while SPM is the national certificate sat in government and national-type schools such as the separate SMJK Nan Hwa.
Fees at Nan Hwa High School
Nan Hwa High School does not publish a fixed fee table online, so prospective families should request current figures from the school office. As a guide, Chinese Independent High Schools in Malaysia generally sit in the RM 3,000 to RM 12,000 per year range, with the level depending on the year of study and whether a student takes boarding. Because Nan Hwa runs on-site accommodation, boarders should expect a separate residence charge on top of tuition. Contact the school on 05-6913457 for tuition, registration, and boarding costs.
Admissions at Nan Hwa High School
