About HELP University

HELP University was founded in 1986 by Datuk Dr Paul Chan, who started the institution with RM 25,000 in initial capital, a figure that is often cited to illustrate the degree to which the university built itself incrementally from private resources rather than government endowment. The institution began as HELP Institute, offering professional courses and pre-university programs in a period when private higher education in Malaysia was still a relatively young sector. Over the following decades it expanded its academic scope, received university college status, and was eventually granted full university status, adopting the HELP University name.

HELP holds the #105 position in the QS Asia University Rankings, which places it among the better-regarded Malaysian private universities in the regional ranking. Its institutional rating under Malaysia’s SETARA framework is Competitive. These positions reflect a university that has built credibility over time in specific subject areas rather than one that has grown into a large multi-faculty institution covering every discipline.

The university’s two main campuses are in the Klang Valley. The Pusat Bandar Damansara campus in Kuala Lumpur serves as the primary academic site, housing most faculties and administrative offices. A second campus operates in Subang 2, providing additional teaching space for selected programs. This dual-campus structure keeps HELP within the urban and suburban belt of Greater Kuala Lumpur, where the bulk of its student base is concentrated.

HELP’s most frequently cited distinction is historical: it was the first Malaysian private university to offer a psychology degree. Programs at HELP University

HELP University’s program portfolio is deliberately narrower than many larger Malaysian private universities. Rather than offering degrees across engineering, medicine, and design, HELP concentrates on a core set of disciplines: psychology, law, business, information technology, and education.

The Faculty of Behavioural Sciences is the university’s most prominent academic unit. It offers undergraduate degrees in psychology, covering clinical, counselling, and industrial-organisational psychology tracks. Postgraduate options include master’s and doctoral programs in clinical psychology and counselling, which are relevant to the growing demand for registered counsellors and psychologists under Malaysia’s mental health regulatory framework. The Faculty of Business and Law provides degree programs in accounting, finance, marketing, management, and economics alongside a standalone law degree program. The law degree is recognised for students who intend to proceed to the Bar or to legal practice in Malaysia, subject to completing the Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP). Business programs have exemption links to ACCA and CIMA, allowing students to sit professional accounting exams with some papers waived.

The Faculty of Technology offers degrees in computer science, information technology, and data analytics. These programs are smaller in scale than comparable offerings at technology-specialist universities, but they connect to HELP’s professional network in the Klang Valley business community.

Education programs prepare students for careers in teaching and educational administration, with offerings at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. These include early childhood education, primary education, and educational psychology tracks.

One of HELP’s structural advantages is its transfer arrangement network. The university has articulation agreements with more than 30 overseas universities in the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States, Canada, and New Zealand. Students can complete their first one or two years at HELP and then transfer to a partner institution to complete the remainder of their degree, paying Malaysian tuition fees for the initial portion and overseas fees only for the final years.

Facilities at HELP University

The Pusat Bandar Damansara campus occupies a built-up urban site in one of Kuala Lumpur’s established commercial and residential districts. The campus layout is vertical rather than sprawling, reflecting the land constraints of its location in the city. Academic facilities include lecture theatres, seminar rooms, computer labs, and dedicated psychology research and training facilities that include observation rooms and counselling practice suites used for both training and supervised client work.

The library provides access to physical collections and digital databases relevant to psychology, law, and business research. Law students have access to a moot court facility used for trial practice and advocacy training exercises. The campus includes a student services centre, prayer facilities, and food and beverage options within the building complex.

The Subang 2 campus provides a separate teaching environment for selected programs and is designed for students who find the Subang Jaya corridor more accessible than Damansara. Transportation between the two campuses is manageable for students who need to access facilities at both sites.

Because HELP is an urban campus without extensive grounds, most student recreation and lifestyle activities take place in the surrounding Damansara and Bangsar areas, which have a high concentration of cafes, fitness centres, medical clinics, and retail services within walking or short driving distance.

Admissions at HELP University

HELP University accepts applications for intakes in January, May, and September each year, following a pattern common to Malaysian private universities operating on a semester calendar. The multiple intake windows allow students from both local and international academic systems to begin without waiting for a single annual entry point.

Foundation and pre-university programs require a minimum of five credits in SPM or an equivalent O-Level qualification, including passes in English and mathematics. Direct undergraduate entry requires completed A-Level, STPM, UEC, foundation, or diploma qualifications, with minimum grade thresholds that differ by faculty. Law programs specify passes in English at SPM or equivalent level as a prerequisite. Psychology programs at undergraduate level generally require a credit in Biology or additional science subjects, though requirements can be verified with the admissions office.

International students need to demonstrate English proficiency through IELTS (minimum 5.5 to 6.0 depending on the program) or equivalent recognized tests. Students whose secondary education was conducted in English may apply for an exemption from this requirement.

For the transfer articulation pathway, students contact both HELP’s admissions office and the partner university directly to confirm credit transfer terms. The specific number of credits transferred and the entry point into the partner degree program depend on the grades earned in the HELP portion of the program and the policies of the receiving institution.

HELP University in Kuala Lumpur

HELP University’s main campus is in Pusat Bandar Damansara, a mixed commercial and residential area in the western part of Kuala Lumpur, close to the boundary with Petaling Jaya in Selangor. The area is well connected by road, with access via the Penchala Link, the SPRINT Highway, and Federal Route 4, and it sits near the Damansara and Bukit Kiara residential neighbourhoods.

Public transport connections to the Damansara campus include the Semantan MRT station on the Putrajaya Line, which is within walking distance of the campus. The broader Damansara corridor is served by Rapid KL bus routes, and the area’s proximity to the Duke Highway and the Lebuhraya Damansara-Puchong makes it accessible by car from most parts of the Klang Valley within 30 to 45 minutes during off-peak hours.

The campus location in an established part of Kuala Lumpur means students benefit from the surrounding urban infrastructure. Bangsar, Hartamas, and Desa Sri Hartamas are within a short drive, offering a wide range of food, retail, and leisure options that are more accessible here than at universities located in purpose-built townships further from the city.
